Tearfund Learn – Church & Community Transformation Resources

Tearfund provides an extensive collection of biblical, practical and field-tested resources to equip local churches, Christian organisations, facilitators and community leaders for holistic church and community transformation.

A central emphasis of Tearfund’s approach is the potential of the local church as an agent of transformation. Churches are encouraged to understand their biblical calling not only within their congregations, but also in relation to the needs, opportunities and God-given resources of the communities around them.

Through Church and Community Transformation (CCT), Tearfund helps churches live out an integral understanding of mission in which faith and practical action belong together. Transformation includes spiritual, relational, social, economic and environmental dimensions and seeks restoration in people’s relationships with God, themselves, one another and creation.

The approach is particularly valuable for churches that want to move from primarily church-centred activities toward a more holistic engagement with their neighbourhood, village, city or wider community. At the same time, Tearfund’s resources are not limited to local churches. They can also be used by denominations, church networks, Christian ministries, NGOs, development organisations, facilitators and collaborative transformation initiatives.

Church and Community Transformation (CCT)

Church and Community Transformation is not primarily a single project or programme. It is a process through which churches develop a biblical vision for integral mission, engage with their communities, identify local needs and opportunities, recognise existing assets and resources, and take practical action together.

The goal is sustainable, locally owned transformation rather than dependency on external resources. Churches and communities are encouraged to recognise what God has already placed among them — people, skills, relationships, knowledge, land, organisations and other resources — and mobilise these assets to address their own priorities.

Transformation can begin with individuals and families, grow within the local church and community, and ultimately contribute to change at wider societal and national levels.

Church and Community Mobilisation

A major pathway within Tearfund’s approach is Church and Community Mobilisation (CCM) and the Church and Community Mobilisation Process (CCMP).

The process equips facilitators to help churches and communities:

  • Develop a biblical vision for integral mission
  • Understand their community and its needs
  • Identify existing strengths, assets and opportunities
  • Build relationships between churches and communities
  • Mobilise local people and resources
  • Identify and prioritise community needs together
  • Plan and implement locally owned responses
  • Reduce dependency on external assistance
  • Learn from experience and improve their activities
  • Work toward sustainable and holistic transformation

This makes the approach highly relevant for churches seeking practical ways to engage their communities while strengthening local ownership, participation and multiplication.

Umoja – Transformation Together

Umoja is one of Tearfund’s established church and community transformation approaches. The word Umoja means “togetherness” in Swahili and reflects the emphasis on churches and communities working together.

The Umoja resources provide a practical process for helping church leaders, congregations and communities discover their potential and work together toward positive change. Facilitator and coordinator guides include Bible studies, participatory activities, practical tools and step-by-step guidance for initiating and developing a transformation process.

Umoja is particularly useful where churches want to begin engaging their communities but need a structured and reproducible process to help move from biblical vision to practical action.

The Light Wheel – Understanding Holistic Transformation

The Light Wheel is Tearfund’s framework for understanding, facilitating and measuring holistic transformation. Rather than defining transformation only in spiritual or economic terms, it considers multiple interconnected dimensions of human wellbeing.

The framework helps churches, communities and organisations ask whether change is taking place across the whole of life. It can be used for reflection, planning, community conversations, monitoring and evaluation.

The Light Wheel is especially valuable for organisations and churches seeking to understand what holistic transformation means in practice and how progress can be recognised and measured over time.

From Vision to Action

Tearfund describes effective church and community transformation through a practical process that includes Vision, Reflect, Equip, Act and Learn.

Churches first discover a biblical vision for God’s mission and whole-life transformation. Individuals and churches then reflect on their own attitudes and practices, receive practical tools for engaging their communities, take action together and continually learn from their experience.

This combination of biblical reflection, practical equipping and community action helps transformation become part of the ongoing life and mission of the church rather than a separate development programme.

Beyond its specific Church and Community Transformation resources, Tearfund Learn provides practical resources across a wide range of areas relevant to holistic Kingdom transformation.

These include:

  • Church & Community – mobilising churches and communities for locally led transformation

For Local Churches

Local churches can use Tearfund resources to explore questions such as:

  • What is God’s vision for our church and community?
  • How can our church become more engaged with the people around us?
  • What are the real needs and opportunities in our community?
  • What resources and capacities already exist locally?
  • How can church members use their gifts, professions and relationships for transformation?
  • How can we work together with community leaders and other organisations?
  • How can we move from individual activities toward sustainable transformation?

The resources can therefore help a local church move from vision to assessment, mobilisation, action, learning and multiplication.

Beyond the Local Church

Although the local church is central to Tearfund’s transformation approach, the vision extends beyond individual congregations. Transformation can involve church networks, denominations, community organisations, businesses, civil society, government structures and other actors within society.

CCT can contribute to change at several interconnected levels — individual, church, community and wider societal or national levels. This makes the resources valuable not only for individual church projects but also for regional and national movements seeking holistic transformation.

Use within GCN

Tearfund’s resources provide a valuable toolbox for GCN churches, teams and partners seeking to advance holistic Kingdom transformation.

They are particularly relevant for helping churches move beyond programmes inside the church toward intentional engagement with their communities and the wider spheres of life and society.

GCN teams can explore the Tearfund Learn library and select resources appropriate to their local context rather than implementing one fixed model. The materials can support local church transformation, facilitator training, community assessment, mobilisation, agriculture and livelihoods, peacebuilding, resilience, advocacy and broader community transformation initiatives.

The combination of biblical foundations, local ownership, practical mobilisation and whole-life transformation makes Tearfund Learn a significant resource platform for churches and networks seeking sustainable Kingdom impact in their communities.
